Call for abstracts “International EWA Symposium on Sustainable Wastewater Management New Strategies, Technologies and Innovative Solutions”

EWA Symposium on Sustainable Wastewater Management is held during IFAT 2010, one of the most important international trade fair for environmental technology, offering also entire range of products and services on water and wastewater management. In addition to exposed commercial and technical information, the visitors will be able to follow a parallel EWA Symposium, organized to exchange the latest findings and share experiences of engineers and scientists regarding new strategies, techniques and innovative solutions, and allow the participants to hold discussions on the applications and practical implementation. The programme will have a practical focus which fits in well with the interests of the delegates and exhibitors at IFAT 2010.

The conference focus includes but is not limited to the topics listed below. Abstracts for podium presentations are invited. The following sessions are proposed:

Session 1:  Enhancement in sewage systems and its rehabilitation and maintenance
Session 2: Wet weather problems and solutions
Session 3: Emerging issues in wastewater treatment technologies (new technologies, low cost and alternate solutions, energy strategies ...)

The Stockholm Statement from World Water Week to the COP-15

The participants of the 2009 World Water Week in Stockholm today unanimously said that water must be included in the COP-15 climate negotiations in Copenhagen this December. At various sessions throughout the Week, a number of organizations and officials have articulated the reasons why water needs to be an integral part of the negotiation process on climate change and adaptation. Those reasons became key points of the “Stockholm Statement” which the assembled participants of the 2009 World Water Week unanimously supported at the final plenary session this morning. UWWTD -5th implementation report

On August 5, 2009, the EC Commission released the 5th implementation report on the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC ( summary and annexes ). Main conclusions of this assessment are:
-      Very high degree of inadequate or no reporting (only 18 Member States covered);
-      Establishment of collecting systems is progressing well (ranging between 70 and 100 % except for Romania (47%) and Cyprus (49%);
-      Good overall level of secondary treatment, but big variations (secondary treatment was in place for 87 % of the pollution load, with a compliance rate of 86%);
-      Varied implementation picture as regards more stringent treatment (ranging from 13% in Portugal and 100% in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands);
-      Normal areas and sensitive areas under Article 5(2) have less infrastructure in place than sensitive areas under Article 5(4);
-      Waste water treatment of big cities/big dischargers is at a very high level.

As part of the ongoing integration of UWWTD in the Water Information System for Europe – WISE, it is now possible to see some of the reported information displayed on maps that can be viewed at zoom-able scales ( more ).

Directive 86/278/EEC on sludge recovery in agriculture

On August 10, 2009, EWA sludge working group (contact person: Peter Matthews ) submitted comments on the draft summary report on the environmental, economic and social impacts of the use of sewage sludge on land. These were mainly drawn from the views presented at Pembroke workshop in 2008. Main points of concerns were:
-      Contamination by heavy metals, organic pollutants and pathogens (trends, limit values, control, risk assessment);
-      Taking into consideration the Quality Assurance Systems implemented in some Member States (Germany, Sweden);
-      Updating the COST 68/681 programme on the Treatment and use of Sewage Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes, which ran from 1972-1990.

This first part focused on the knowledge review and the baseline scenario. The second part will take place will be soon (before the end of this year ) and will focus on the scenarios, including a sludge ban. A stakeholders meeting is likely to be organized.

FP7 Call for Proposals

On July 30, 2009, the EC Commission released a call for proposals under the FP 7, which allocates €170,000,000 million for research topics in all the four activities of the Theme 6 “Environment (including climate change)”. Among those topics are actions to promote industrial and SME participation, specific actions to reinforce international cooperation (international cooperation is supported and encouraged throughout all areas), dissemination actions to strengthen the visibility, effectiveness and uptake of EU research results, and Era-Nets in the field of 'Biodiversity', 'Eco innovation' and 'Water management'. In addition, in this call, several "bottom-up" topics have been introduced to further exploring new and innovative approaches and to encourage participation of stakeholders including the SME and industrial participation. Finally, several cross-cutting actions between various Themes of the FP7 Cooperation programme have been foreseen in order to encourage pluri-disciplinarity in marine sciences and technologies (Ocean for tomorrow call), strengthen Africa's research base and the EU-African Union scientific partnership (Africa call) and participate in actions within the European recovery package (Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), on "Energy-efficient Buildings" and "Green cars"). Deadline for submitting proposal is January 5, 2010 ( more )
