5th EWA Brussels Conference “European Water Management and the Implementation of the EU Floods Directive”

The European Water Association is delighted to invite you to join us in Brussels to the 5th EWA Brussels Conference
“European Water Management and the Implementation of the EU Floods Directive”. Our annual conference will be held on the 6th of November 2009 in Brussels.
This year we further explore the implementation of sustainable water management and the Water Framework Directive, discussing the aspects of flood protection and implementation of flood policies.
The conference, organised in cooperation with the European Commission, will include a keynote address by Dr Fritz Holzwarth, contributions from experts in the field and will end with a Panel Discussion with all speakers participating.
The 5th EWA Brussels conference will bring you closer to the aspects of flood policy associated with the Water Framework Directive.

Call for abstracts “International EWA Symposium on Sustainable Wastewater Management New Strategies, Technologies and Innovative Solutions”

EWA Symposium on Sustainable Wastewater Management is held during IFAT 2010, one of the most important international trade fair for environmental technology, offering also entire range of products and services on water and wastewater management. In addition to exposed commercial and technical information, the visitors will be able to follow a parallel EWA Symposium, organized to exchange the latest findings and share experiences of engineers and scientists regarding new strategies, techniques and innovative solutions, and allow the participants to hold discussions on the applications and practical implementation. The programme will have a practical focus which fits in well with the interests of the delegates and exhibitors at IFAT 2010.

The conference focus includes but is not limited to the topics listed below. Abstracts for podium presentations are invited. The following sessions are proposed:

Session 1:        Enhancement in sewage systems and its rehabilitation and maintenance
Session 2:        Wet weather problems and solutions
Session 3:        Emerging issues in wastewater treatment technologies (new technologies, low cost
and alternate solutions, energy strategies ...)
Session 4:        Management of biosolids

Abstract submission deadline is 9 November 2009 .

To learn more how to submit your abstract visit the EWA website or contact us .

Drinking Water Directive

On September 21, 2009, Jan Cortvriend, the desk officer in charge of the Directive presented the issues at stake at the Committee of Regions. In his presentation, he put emphasis on 2 major points: the implementation of the Water Safety Plans and the extension of the reporting obligation to small supplies (those supplying less than 5.000 persons but more than 50 persons (10 m3 per day) – these are supposed to comply with the directive’s prescription but are currently submitted to reporting – 13 % of the EU population). There has been a lot of delay with the impact assessment study, which will hopefully be completed in February or March 2010. Then the official release of Commission proposal for a new Drinking Water Directive will take place before summer 2010.

Urban Waste Water Treatment directive
-      The European Commission has decided to take the United Kingdom to the European Court of Justice on the grounds that urban waste water collecting systems and treatment facilities in London and Whitburn in north east England do not comply with EU legislation.
-      The European Commission has sent Spain a final written warning for failing to implement a court ruling on the treatment of waste water in the area of Playa de la Motilla in the Valencia region. Should Spain fail to take the necessary steps to remedy the situation the Commission may again bring it before the European Court of Justice and request that fines be imposed on Spain.

LIFE conference on water related project in liaison with EU policy

The LIFE Unit of DG Environment organized a conference in Brussels on October 15 to present some projects funded by the LIFE program in the field of water management. These projects are aimed at:
-      Demonstrating new solutions in water management and, this way, providing innovative ideas to DG Environment to elaborate and design water policies.
-      Facilitating the implementation of the EU water legislation on difficult issues (eutrophication, water scarcity, etc) and showing successful cases that can be replicated elsewhere.

The conference was an opportunity for the Water and LIFE Units to exchange with LIFE project developers. From the discussion, it was concluded that the WFD is a sound tool to face the water stress even if one can regret that it pays little attention on quantitative aspects. Climate change adaptation will be the main issue on the agenda for the years to come but other issues are emerging: water economics, WFD effectiveness to deliver on diffuse pollution or hydromorphology. Liaison between water actors was a central topic in the discussion.

UNW-DPC organises a Regional Workshop on Water Loss Reduction In Water & Sanitation Utilities in South East European Countries (SEE)

As a follow-up of the recommendations of the International Workshop on „Drinking Water Loss Reduction: Developing Capacity for Applying Solutions“, held on 3-5 September 2008 in Bonn, Germany, and in order to address this problem at the regional level, UNW-DPC is organizing in cooperation with UN-HABITAT and BWA the workshop on „Water Loss Reduction in Water and Sanitation Utilities in South East European Countries (SEE)“.

This workshop will document available know-how and best practices and will recommend new approaches for more efficient management in the field of water and sanitation with a focus on water loss reduction .

New Catalogue of FP7 projects 2007 - 2009

This 242-page document is a compilation of the catalogues of projects 2007, 2008 and 2009. It presents research projects in the field of environment (including climate change) according to key research areas. ( Catalog )

PURE – project on urban reduction of eutrophication

PURE is a EU funded project that supports selected waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) around the Baltic Sea Region to reach phosphorous content of 0,5 mg/l in outgoing municipal wastewaters with the means of chemical phosphorus removal. PURE brings together with 9 city-partners and their municipal waste water treatment plants with the Union of Baltic Cities, John Nurminen Foundation and HELCOM. ( more ).

EU research on Climate change

This publication gathers the abstracts of European research projects on climate change and related to climate change which have been completed recently or are ongoing under the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes for research. This document aims at providing a relevant overview of research activities on climate change funded by the European Community to participants to the third World Climate Conference held in Geneva in August 2009 and to the UNFCCC 15th Conference of the Parties meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009. ( Document )

The Alps facing the challenge of changing water resources

Spanning the centre of continental Europe, the Alps play a crucial role in accumulating and supplying water to the continent. As such, they deliver vital ecosystem services both within and beyond the region, underpinning social and economic wellbeing in vast lowland areas. Troublingly, the alpine climate has changed significantly during the past century, with temperatures increasing more than twice the global average. Drawing on the most recent knowledge of climate change impacts in the Alps and experiences across the region, this report analyses the risks that climate change presents to the region's water supply and quality, identifying needs, constraints, opportunities, policy levers and options for adaptation. It extracts policy guidance on adaptation practice and aims to assist regional and local stakeholders in developing robust adaptation strategies. ( EEA Report No 8/2009 )
